The designs of Yves were so innovative, that they led to big succes. For example the trapezium dress from 1958, it was wide around the waist and not fitted. Yves used bright and dark colors and he designed also a collection with only black items.
During the Algerian war Yves was called to serve the French army. After 20 days he was included in a psychiatric hospital due to a nervous breakdown, he was treated with electroshock therapy. Because of his mental breakdown Saint Laurent was stripped headed the fashion house Dior. Together with his partner Pierre Bergé he started his own fashion house, also known as YSL.

YSL clients were for example his ‘muse’ Loulou de la Falaise and the actrice Catherine Deneuve.
In 1993 YSL was sold for about 600 million dollars to the company Sanofi. 6 years later YSL was sold to Gucci. Tom Ford was creative director of the ready-to-wear-collection, while Yves the haute couture line designed. In 2002 YSL was, because of Yves ages, drug problems, depression, alcoholism, critics on the designes of YSL and the problems with Tom Ford, closed. After this Yves moved back to his house in Marrakesh, Morocco.
